The Natural Outdoor Gym Workout: by Kirsty Exner

Rossland is a playground that offers endless ways to exercise and have fun. We have a free natural outdoor gym all around you! Mountain biking is a great way to get in shape and have fun while doing so! Here are a few tips on how to enjoy your ride even more:

Look ahead. Your bike will follow your eye gaze. If you’re looking ahead down the trail, that is where your bike will go. Look to the side or at a big rock in the trail, and sure enough, you will be heading straight into that big rock! For those who are learning more advanced skills and are testing their fear factor on riding along skinny logs, this same rule applies. Look ahead. Look off to the side of the skinny and that is where your front tire will lead!

When descending down a hill, whether the pitch is mellow or very steep, think: “Hips Back!” Keep your pedals level bracing your leg that is in front and point your heels down towards the ground. Always have one finger on the brake so you are ready for anything.

When braking, think about keeping the wheels turning as you brake. This is important for a two main reasons. (1) You will be more in control when descending (2) You will not ruin the trail. Ride, don’t slide!

If you feel like you need a little extra workout to build your strength, here is a 10 minute workout you can do just about anywhere. All you need is flat ground.

10-15 tricep dips on a bench or flat rock

10-15 push-ups into a flat slanted rock

Hold a plank in a grassy area for up to 1 minute

20 lunges in a grassy field (for better absorption for your knees)

Bring a friend, stay on the trails and have fun!
